Senior Human Services Researcher

Position Description:

Mathematica partners with public- and private-sector organizations to use evidence to improve programs and policies. We are dedicated to improving public well-being and reimagining the way the world gathers and uses data. Our 1,200-plus experts collect, build, and analyze evidence to address urgent social challenges. Mathematica works across the country and around the globe, serving federal agencies, state and local governments, foundations, universities, professional associations, and businesses. Our analyses yield information that guide decisions in areas ranging from education, child welfare, and family support to nutrition, health, employment, disability, criminal justice, and international development.

We are seeking senior researchers to lead evaluations, data analytic engagements, and evidence-based technical assistance and program integrity efforts in the areas of education, family support, employment, child welfare, assistance programs, and related topics. The following projects illustrate some of our recent work:

  • A project to provide states, school districts, and organizations with assistance on developing approaches to strengthen the professional development of teachers and principals

  • A project to review evidence in the areas of father and paternal relative engagement in child welfare, identify key touchpoints for engagement, and review continuous learning processes

  • A study to quantify the extent of identity theft in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by estimating the its prevalence and cost to the program

  • An evaluation to examine the impacts of charter schools on students' achievement, students' school success, and parents' satisfaction

  • A project to design an evaluation framework and pilot data system to enhance the National Science Foundation’s ability to monitor programs and to conduct evaluations with rigor

  • A project to use behavioral science to design and evaluate program improvements

As a senior human services researcher, you will work in a multidisciplinary setting that includes staff with degrees in public policy, economics, statistics, psychology, education, sociology, demography, and related fields. Duties of the position

  • Engage with clients to understand the challenges they face and work collaboratively with them to develop innovative solutions

  • Direct teams and oversee all aspects of high quality project delivery

  • Contribute to business development efforts and proposals for new projects

  • Develop and design projects that address clients’ needs

  • Present to policy and professional audiences

Position Requirements:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent work experience in economics, public policy, sociology, demography, statistics, psychology, education, or related field

  • Seven or more years of relevant professional experience

  • A demonstrated history of working collaboratively with federal agencies or state and local governments

  • Experience directing major projects that support evidence-based decision making

  • Experience leading proposals to address the needs of public-service agencies

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including an ability to translate evidence for program and policy audiences

  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-disciplinary teams

Various federal agencies with whom we contract require that staff successfully undergo a background investigation or security clearance as a condition of working on the project. If you are assigned to such a project, you will be required to obtain the requisite security clearance.
