Survey Associate

Mathematica is a nationally recognized research organization that conducts social policy studies on health, disability, early childhood, education, family support, labor, nutrition, and international issues. We currently have openings in our Health Unit for Survey Associates in five of our office locations (Princeton, NJ; Washington, DC; Cambridge, MA; Chicago, IL; and Oakland, CA). As a Survey Associate in our Health Unit, you would join our staff of health research professionals who conduct a wide range of health policy assessment and program improvement studies. Duties of the position:

  • Provide support to project leadership by assisting with the implementation and oversight of survey-related tasks, and performing quality control activities

  • Assist in designing and testing data collection instruments and protocols

  • Prepare training materials and assist with project training sessions

  • Participate in qualitative data collection activities such as cognitive interviews, in-depth interviews, site visits, and focus groups

  • Assist in other research activities, including organizing webinars and technical expert meetings, taking meeting notes, drafting written materials, providing technical assistance to sites, and cleaning and coding data

  • Create and maintain spreadsheets using Microsoft Project or Excel

  • Monitor project expenditures and prepare monthly project reports

  • Some travel is required



  • A Bachelor's degree in a social science, public policy, health policy or administration, or related discipline or equivalent experience

  • Academic or job-related experience conducting data collection and/or research in health field is highly desired

  • Flexibility to handle multiple tasks and work on multiple projects

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Desire and ability to work as part of a research team

  • Accuracy with work, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail

  • Academic or job-related experience using Word, Excel, or Microsoft Project

  • Experience with quantitative or qualitative analytic software such as SPSS, SAS, STATA, NVivo, or ATLAS.ti is highly desired

  • Spanish or other language fluency a plus

Various federal agencies with whom we contract require that staff successfully undergo a background investigation or security clearance as a condition of working on the project. If you are assigned to such a project, you will be required to obtain the requisite security clearance.
